Schools will be contacted directly when the details have been finalised. The ‘Underdogs’ panel will train in Patrickswell next Wednesday (May 12th) at 3.30. Good Luck

Best of luck to the Patrickswell mini-7′s hurling and camogie teams who will represent the City division in the County finals which take place in Rathkeale on Thursday, May 13th.

Mini 7′s finals

Well done Raheehagh N.S.! On Wednesday, May 13th, the West Limerick mini-7′s champions added the County title to the impressive list of titles they have won in the past year. A one-goal victory over City champs, Patrickswell N.S., followed by a draw with Doon C.B.S. in Neville Park, Rathkeale was enough to secure Raheenagh’s success.

Good workout for Mackey Cup Panel

The City Mackey Cup team’s challenge match (v Mungret/St. Paul’s U-14 side) was a very useful exercise indeed.  Mungret were comfortable winners on the day but boh sides played well and the selectors learned a lot  about their players.  The Mackey Cup will be played on May 17th in Bruff.  The City team will play the West at 4.30.  The final is set for 5.30.

Mackey Cup Result

Well done to South Limerick, winners of the 2010 Mackey Cup! The South side defeated a gallant City side by 2-5 to 1-4 in a tension-filled final. The standard of hurling displayed by both teams throughout the tournament delighted the large attendance at Bruff GAA Grounds.

JFK are 2010 Olo Cup Champions!

JFK won the Olo Cup final (v Patrickswell NS), after extra time, by 3-3 to 1-5. The result was in the balance right up to the final minute of extra time when JFK goaled and clinched the title. Both teams hurled exceptionally well. When these sides met in the league, there was 18 points between them! Without a doubt Paul O Connor’s charges had come on leaps and bounds in the interim, in fact, few would have begrudged the ‘Well victory in normal time had they been able to achieve it. For the winners, Peadar Collins had an outstanding game at centre back, while Patrickswell’s Danny Harty had an absolute stormer at midfield for the runners-up. This was JFK’s second Olo Cup in 4 years. The high standard of hurling and sportsmanship on display throughout the competition augurs well for the future of hurling in the City.

JFK are 2010 Leader Cup champions

City champions, Scoil JFK added the Leader Cup to their fine collection of silverware thanks to a well-deserved victory over Kilmallock (South Limerick champions) in the final. The trophy now sits proudly beside the Olo Cup in the school’s bulging trophy cabinet! The Leader Cup dates back to the late 1920′s. The Leader Cup is the trophy awarded to the Primary School County Champions in hurling. This was the first time Scoil J.F.K.’s won this particular title. In the semi-finals JFK beat West Limerick champions, Courtenay BNS (Newcastlewest). In the other semi-final Kilmallock defeated Killinure N.S. (East Limerick champions).

Ballybrown NS win 2010 ‘Green & White Shield’

The girls of Ballybrown NS are top of the primary schools camogie world after a thrilling victory in the Green & White Shield in The Gaelic Grounds on Thursday June 17th. Played in scorching sunshine, Ballybrown NS had a titanic duel with Crecora National School but emerged winners on the scoreline of Ballybrown NS 2-1: Crecora NS 0-4.
Indeed Paul Kennedy of Cumann na mBunscol who presented the trophy to Ballybrown’s outstanding captain Melissa Kearns said that it was a shame that any side had to lose.

In the semi-final, Ballybrown defeated holders Templeglantine NS by 3-4 to 1-2 while Crecora overcame South champions Ballyagran NS by 1-7 to 2-1.

Ballybrown’s success means that both the hurling and camogie Primary School County titles will rest in the City Division until summer 2011.

Congratulations Scoil Chriost Ri!

On Saturday, October 2nd, Scoil Chriost Ri won the Ard Scoil Ris Hurling Academy Trophy for the first time in the 4-year history of the tournament. Teams from primary schools in Limerick and Clare took part. Scoil Chriost Ri defeated Adare BNS and Gaelscoil Sairseal in the group stages but lost to the holders, Patrickswell NS.  This set of results meant that S.C. Ri qualified to play Shountrade NS in the semi final. Patrickswell played St. Nessan’s of Mungret in the second semi-final. The outcome of these matches was that S. C. Ri played the boys from Mungret in the final.  Victory for the Caherdavin boys was particularly pleasing for their mentors Liam Dillon, Mike Cronin and Shane O Neill.  Shountrade NS won the Shield final (3rd place play-off) v Patrickswell NS.  Organisation of the tournament was overseen by Ard Scoil teachers Niall Crowe, Niall Moran and Liam Kennedy, among others. The 2010/11 Harty Cup panel was also on hand to help out.

Development of an Exciting new Hurling Wall/Alley Game

A Chairde,

Early in the new year, Cumann na mBunscol will be running a Hurling Wall/Alley game on a trial basis at Bohermore Handball Alley, with a view to running a competition at some stage in the future. Such games take place regularly within established hurling nurseries such as St Colmans Fermoy etc. and are seen as an excellent way of developing ball control, hand-eye co-ordination, and first touch. My long term hope would be that children would buy into the concept of using a hurling wall, and practice themselves in their own time with their friends either on a one wall hurling wall with marked lines for boundaries or in an enclosed alley with the walls acting as boundaries. Having bought into this concept they may recognise the value of it throughout their adult hurling careers. There are a number of hurling walls springing up throughout the county and its in the best interests of Limerick hurling to utilise them to their best potential. A local competition could be run locally by the local school/club if there is an interest in running a competition, with the winner progressing to the county competition. Who will ultimately run this competition if it became a success is yet to be considered but in time it could eventually be run by either Cumann na mBunscol or County Board Na nOg/Coaching and Games.

As of now, I am seeking 8 players from 6th Class within reasonable driving distance of Bohermore to participate in games with trial rules that can be tweaked as necessary to get the optimum format. More than one player from the same school will be considered for these trial games depending on availability of players. Ideally but not exclusively, it would make sense if the players came from the nearer parts of the South, East and City divisions. I will be finalising a set of rules in the near future, and working to those on one evening/night. If on the night its decided to tweak the rules to enhance the game, another evening/night will be arranged to trial the new set of rules with either the same players if interested, or new players.

If you are interested in improving the hurlers in your school, and have someone who may be interested in participating please get in contact with me. For the purposes of these trial games, it would probably be best to consider children whose parents have a genuine interest in hurling and who would be appreciative of this concept, and are free to bring them to Bohermore when the occasion arises. Its important also to have children and parents with a proven track record of being punctual as the lights in Bohermore are on a timer and the next time could be booked. There is no obligation on any school or individual to participate in this but I would appreciate if you could suggest this within your schools. For the purposes of the trial, to ensure that the standard is even, it would be best to have boys who will be attending trials for the Mackey Cup in their respective divisions.

If you wish to contact me I am not available on phone/email during school hours, but I am available at all other times including weekends and holiday periods.
